Charging Policy
A courtesy (emergency) lunch of a sandwich, milk, and fruit, is available to students who do not have money in their lunch account. To help assure that students eat, we may allow a child to charge a meal (the parent/guardian is responsible to pay for any meals served to their student).  Students who have a negative balance will not be permitted to charge meals until their account is current.  Staff, adults, guests, and students who are not enrolled in the Auburn School District may not charge.
Skyward Offers Numerous Services for Families!

Education is enhanced when students are well nourished.  Healthy, fit, well-nourished children can learn--those who are not, cannot.
The Child Nutrition department of the Auburn School District is a self-supporting operation responsible for planning, ordering, preparing, and serving attractive, nutritious meals for district students and staff.

When you receive confirmation of meal eligibility for your student,

please do not complete an application for that student.

If there is a student in your home for whom you have not received confirmation of eligibility, please call the Child Nutrition Services office (253-931-4972) between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to see if the other student can be added to the approved student's eligibility.

If you have not applied for school-meal benefits for this school year,

There are nearly 100 Child Nutrition Services employees in the Auburn School District. These professionals have a wealth of experience, training, initiative, and dedication, and keep kitchens in the district's 22 schools operating every school day.

The mission of the child nutrition department is to meet the nutritional needs of students and staff of the Auburn School District by offering a variety of quality, nutritious meals in a timely, cost-effective manner.  In our work to fulfill this mission we:

  • make decisions based on what is best for kids.
  • offer online options to apply for free or reduced-price meals and prepay meals.
  • maintain  friendly, professional, clean, and safe environments focused on students as customers.
  • contribute to students' education in the areas of health and nutrition.
  • source, prepare, and offer fresh, natural, whole, and homemade foods as often as possible.
  • obtain produce from local farmers and select organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
  • partner with the Farm to School Program and feature a variety of local foods as Harvest-of-the-Month selections, giving students opportunities to learn about and taste new foods.
  • participate in the National School Lunch Programs (breakfast, lunch, after-school snack, and summer food).
  • have a school (Pioneer) participating in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.
  • provide nutritious meals at several sites in the district community (Auburn, Pacific, and Algona) during July and August.  Our Summer Food Service Program is one of the most comprehensive in the state.

School meals are based on cycle menus and are analyzed by USDA regulations, cost, production, and nutrition.  A variety of hot and cold breakfast and lunch options are available each day.  Menus are developed within federal and state guidelines that govern our program and are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act 2010.  Menus are posted on the website, are available using either of our new apps, and are posted in schools.  Occasionally, menu items may change (substitutions may be made) based on product availability and quality.

A district wellness policy has been adopted by the Auburn School District Board of Directors based on recommendations of the district wellness committee.  The board is committed to providing a school environment that enhances student learning and the development of lifelong wellness practices.  The board supports emphasis on nutrition as well as physical activity (click here to read more).

Child Nutrition Services is the "voice" of good nutrition in the schools.  Nutrition information is shared with students on menus and in the lunchroom and classrooms.  We are enthusiastic about two-way communication and take pride in being a department known to be helpful and supportive.  To assure that our webpage is a valuable resource people will use time and time again, we hope you will let us know if you come across any links that are not working.  Anytime you have questions or concerns regarding the program, the child nutrition director or coordinator may be contacted directly at 253-931-4972.
